Message from the Executive Director

Brian Desjardins

Spring is in the air and we can feel those warm air currents bringing a strong increase in admissions, school bookings and sleepovers already. I recently enjoyed a field trip down to the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton to meet with Karl Kjarsgaard, Director. They have an amazing museum and we look forward to working together with them. I was able to see the restoration process of the Mosquito bomber - another great project and partnership between the City of Calgary and Calgary Mosquito Society.

We are continuing to fundraise for the CF-100 Canuck and are developing a Request for Proposal for the restoration of the aircraft. We are also working with the City on future plans for replacement of the tent hangar. We are looking at increasing the size of the new tent hangar to ensure we have sufficient space for restored aircraft such as the CF-100 as well as new artifacts. Alongside the City of Calgary and the Calgary Mosquito Society we are working on the arrival of the Hawker Hurricane. Specifically we are working on a new exhibit and special keepsake publication that tells the story of Calgary's Hurricane #5389. The Hurricane committee has been meeting often to plan an official unveiling event with more activities for the public. The actual date has not been confirmed but will be announced soon.

We hope to see you at the AGM on April 24th where you can hear more about our plans for the remainder of 2019!

Tiger Moth is Home

Thank you volunteers

Our staff and volunteers are ecstatic to have our Tiger Moth home again after a ten year loan at Heritage Park's Gasoline Alley. On March 4 our team went down to Gasoline Alley to assist with bringing the plane back, and then March 5 was spent safely suspending the aircraft from our rafters. These photographs don't quite do it justice - so you'll just have to plan a trip out to see her.

We're grateful to all of the volunteers who spent two long days, and loaned us their muscles as well. It was two days filled mostly with smiles alongside the hard work!

Meet Our New Collections Manager

Cassandra Cummings

Hi! I’m Cassandra. I’m happy to be starting as the Collections Manager at The Hangar Flight Museum, working with the collections and exhibitions, learning a lot more about Calgary’s aviation history, and sharing our great stories and artifacts. I have more than a decade of experience working in museums and historic sites, including at Heritage Park, the Military Museums, the Calgary Stampede, the British Museum, and the Smithsonian. I love history, and sharing it with others, and making connections with stories and objects. In my spare time you can often find me reading a book and enjoying a cup of tea, visiting a museum or historic site, or planning my next travel adventure!
