May Newsletter
News from Hangar Flight Museum

Did you know that we have a YouTube channel? We have had many requests recently from teachers who regularly bring their students to the museum for field trips to see if there was an option for them to learn about the science of flight online with us. We responded and are posting videos throughout the month of May! Learn from our amazing expert volunteers and subscribe to our channel so that you don't miss future videos.

Episode One: Thrust, Drag, Lift, and Gravity
We have recently participated in #MuseumWeek which is an International social media initiative with a different theme for each day. We shared a throwback post for "Museum Moments" of the Hawker Hurricane travelling down the highway on its return to Calgary. Next week is Tourism Week from May 24-30. We're sure you miss seeing everything that Alberta has to offer, including visiting The Hangar. We have more details below on our reopening strategy, we truly look forward to being able to host you again soon.

Reopening Strategy

target opening date: June 5

Thank you very much to everyone who filled out our survey from the last newsletter. It provides us with a lot of encouragement that many of you are excited to visit us soon once we are able to safely reopen. Your answers have provided us with insight as we take into consideration the measures outlined by the Government of Alberta around museums reopening.

Our current plans are to reopen on Friday June 5 and Saturday June 6. We will begin by being open for two days a week, and we will add additional days in the coming weeks. We will be setting up online booking for our admission tickets so that we can follow the maximum capacity standards set out by the government. Online timed ticketing will also reduce the number of points of contact when you visit the museum.

As soon as we begin to take online ticket reservations we'll be sure to let our members and subscribers know first.

Restoration Update

CF-100 Canuck

Calgary's Canuck is currently undergoing restoration in Wetaskiwin, Alberta following our successful fundraising campaign. The restoration committee had been looking forward to completing our first site visit on March 23rd, but this was canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. We look forward to rescheduling this visit to a later date and we will be providing updates as we can.

Historic Aviation Services Inc. has made some progress with restoring this aircraft. We are already highly anticipating the completion of this project which is currently estimated to be in 2023. We will plan a spectacular homecoming then.

Here are just a few photographs of the early progress:
