New Alberta Restrictions

Going into effect December 13, 2020

Following the Province of Alberta announcements on December 8th, The Hangar Flight Museum will be closed for a minimum of four weeks beginning at 4:00pm on Saturday December 12, 2020.

It is very important to us to keep our community safe and healthy, especially during the holiday season.

We will be working to get our gift shop setup online so that we can offer curbside pickup soon. Our memberships are also still available for purchase online if you're looking for a gift that can be shipped right to the person you're sending a gift to. (more information below)

As soon as we have information on when we'll be able to reopen in 2021 we will have updated information via our newsletter, online and our social media accounts. You can follow us online for more stay-at-home activities, including new online jigsaw puzzles.

Message from the Executive Director

Brian Desjardins

Thank you for being by our side during this rollercoaster of a year. 2020 has seen highs and lows and we know it has been difficult for every one. It's hard to believe that we celebrated the second annual National Aviation Day event at The Hangar this year with the support of Calgary Airport Authority as the event sponsor - it feels like that event was years ago.

In the spring the Museum was closed for most of March, all of April and all of May. When we reopened in June we weren't sure what visitation was going to look like. It brought joy to us to see visitors in the Museum again and hear from them that they enjoyed their visit and had a good experience taking a safe family visit to the Museum.

In the fall we hosted a different kind of Remembrance Day, but again we have heard great feedback from our community and are encouraged to hear that you enjoyed attending the service virtually from your home. Thank you for joining us as we remember the sacrifices made and ensure we never forget.

Just in the last week there has been more excitement at The Hangar. The Curtiss Jenny has returned to The Hangar after years on display at Glenbow. Fred McCall Jr. originally built the replica on site at The Hangar but at the time we were not able to display the plane so it went to a themed exhibit at Glenbow where it has been on display since 2005. As Glenbow begins large-scale restorations and changes, now was the perfect time for the plane to return to The Hangar. Our goal is to have the Jenny on display for the opening of the 2021 Calgary Stampede in July.

A big thank you goes out to Rangeland Truck and Crane who supported this venture by assisting us with transporting the plane across the city. We also must thank our neighbours at Eagle Copters, and our volunteers, for their assistance.

You can learn more about Freddie McCall, Fred McCall Jr., the Curtiss Jenny and its return to The Hangar with video coverage from Global News and an article from CTV Calgary.

As 2020 comes to a close, the new Provincial announcement adds another hump to the rollercoaster that is this year. Although we will not be open to the public this holiday season, we truly could not have come through this year without support from our community.

From all of us here at The Hangar Flight Museum - board, staff and volunteers - we wish you happy holidays and we hope to see you in person in 2021 when it is safe to you to return for a visit.

End of Year Donations

Roof truss repair

We'd like to say a sincere thank you to all of our supporters who made donations to our cause this year on Giving Tuesday. This year we received more donations on Giving Tuesday than we have on any other year. That really speaks to your kindness and generosity during a year that has been difficult for everyone.

As we come upon the end of the year, there is still time to contribute to our fundraiser to repair some of our roof trusses that have been damaged over decades of seasonal humidity changes. If you donate now, you can still receive your charitable tax donation form from CanadaHelps online for this tax year.

Did you also know that CanadaHelps facilitates online donations of securities and mutual funds? It is the most tax credit efficient way to donate to your favourite charities.

Our new humidity system is working well and we can already feel the difference on our skin, never mind the roof trusses and fabric aircraft. This addition will make a big difference to keeping our building and artifacts healthy.
